Breeze urges FAA to bar legacy carriers from buying defunct Spirit’s slots

Breeze Airways has formally requested that the Federal Aviation Administration implement stricter regulations regarding the transfer of airport slots previously held by Spirit Airlines. The low-cost carrier is specifically concerned about legacy airlines acquiring these slots following JetBlue Airways' recent purchase of 22 take-off and landing rights at New airports. This action stems from a desire among Breeze and other low-cost carriers to maintain competitive dynamics within the airline industry. JetBlue secured the acquisition of these slots after Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in September 2024. Regulators are currently evaluating Breeze’s proposal, which seeks to safeguard market competition amidst this significant shift in air service access.
