Why The F-16 Viper's New AESA Radar Makes A 50-Year-Old Fighter More Lethal Than The Day It First Flew

The Lockheed Martin F-16Viper’s enhanced lethality stems primarily from the integration of the AN/APG-83 AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar system, marking a significant upgrade for this aircraft. This new radar dramatically improves the fighter’s ability to detect and track targets at longer ranges and in adverse weather conditions. Initial testing has demonstrated that the upgraded radar significantly increases the Viper’s combat effectiveness against modern threats. The AN/APG-83 provides superior situational awareness and targeting capabilities compared to previous radar systems fitted to the Fighting Falcon. Consequently, the F-16 Viper is now considered more lethal than when it first flew fifty years ago.
