Why Are New Boeing Planes Green Before They Are Delivered?

New Boeing airplanes are painted green during the final stages of production, a practice that began in late 2019 following concerns about potential damage to the aircraft’s composite structures. This temporary coating protects the delicate carbon fiber layers while they are being exposed to the elements during painting operations. The green color is applied over the bare aluminum skin, safeguarding it until the full paint scheme is completed. Boeing engineers determined this process was necessary to prevent surface imperfections from developing on the new planes before delivery. Currently, all Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 777X models undergo this initial green coat application prior to customer acceptance.
