What's next for NASA's just-launched Roman Space Telescope?

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope successfully launched aboard an Atlas V rocket on August 26, 2023, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Following launch, the telescope is currently entering its commissioning phase which will last approximately six months. During this time, engineers and scientists will meticulously test all of the spacecraft’s systems to ensure optimal performance. This crucial period involves characterizing the telescope’s instruments and pointing accuracy with the help of tracking satellites. Once commissioned, Roman will begin its primary science mission focused on mapping dark energy and dark matter throughout the universe.
