Galileo satellites demonstrate position-authentication service as spoofing concerns rise

On September 16th, Galileo satellites successfully demonstrated an authenticated civil positioning capability for the initial time during a Signal Authentication Service concept test. Five Galileo satellites transmitted encrypted signal components to ground receivers participating in the event. These receivers were able to derive a precise position fix by processing the verified navigation and ranging data received from the satellites. The demonstration focused on mitigating potential threats posed by GPS spoofing attacks. This represents a significant step forward in bolstering Galileo’s resilience against malicious interference and ensuring accurate positioning services.
