FAA’s Rollout of SMART AI System Left Out ATC Union

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has expressed significant concerns regarding the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) recent rollout of its Smart Traffic Management Research and Analysis Tool (SMART) artificial intelligence system. According to NATCA officials, the union played no part in the development process, stating they were “not involved in the design, testing, or implementation” of this new technology. This lack of engagement raises questions about transparency and potential impacts on air traffic controllers’ roles within the FAA. The union believes that a collaborative approach would have been more beneficial for ensuring a smooth transition and addressing any operational challenges associated with the SMART AI program.
