Automatic? Boeing Test Pilot Explains How The 777X’s Folding Wings Work

Boeing test pilot Jeff Bund just completed extensive flight tests evaluating the functionality and performance of the 777X’s folding winglets, which are designed to reduce fuel consumption. These winglets, measuring approximately 13 feet tall, automatically deploy during takeoff and retract upon reaching a speed of around 250 knots. During these flights, Bund operated the system remotely from the ground, utilizing a control panel located in Seattle. The primary goal of this automated deployment is to optimize aerodynamic efficiency by adjusting the winglet shape based on airspeed and altitude. Boeing anticipates that this innovative design will contribute significantly to the 777X's projected fuel savings compared to conventional designs.
