Why F-15 Radars Deleted The SR-71 Blackbird As Invalid Clutter During 'Eagle Bait' Sorties

During ‘Eagle Bait’ sorties, United States Air Force F-15 fighter aircraft encountered significant difficulties tracking the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird due to its extreme speed and altitude. The SR-71 flew at speeds exceeding Mach 3 and operated at altitudes above 80,000 feet, presenting a substantial challenge for radar systems. Even with advanced technology, the F-15 radars classified the Blackbird's signals as invalid clutter. This resulted in the F-15s being unable to effectively intercept or engage the reconnaissance aircraft during these training exercises. Consequently, the SR-71 was deemed an unsuitable target by the F-15’s radar systems.
