Why Boeing's Folding Wingtip Was Studied In The 1990s But Not Built Until The 777X

Boeing’s recent implementation of folding wingtips on the 777X represents a significant departure, as these features were previously deemed unnecessary and impractical for the aircraft. Research into this technology began in the 1990s during the development of the 777 program itself. However, at that time, Boeing determined that incorporating folding wingtips would not provide sufficient benefits to justify the added complexity and cost. The decision was made to forgo the feature then, prioritizing other design considerations within the 777's architecture. Today, advancements in materials science and flight control systems have rendered the concept viable, leading to its integration with the larger 777X variant.
