UK launches first airspace-scale contrail avoidance trials

The UK is initiating its inaugural airspace-scale contrail avoidance trial through Operation Blue Skies, commencing later this year in Shanwick oceanic airspace. This 30-month project will evaluate strategies to mitigate the impact of aircraft contrails within the eastern half of the North Atlantic corridor. The initiative is partially funded by a grant from the UK government and represents an operational evaluation phase. Data collection during testing is scheduled to begin immediately following initial setup. Researchers aim to determine optimal routes for reducing contrail formation and their associated effects.
