NASA has completed flammability tests on commercial-off-the-shelf webbings intended for use in elevated oxygen environments planned for upcoming lunar and Mars exploration programs. The tests focused on materials meeting NASA’s flammability requirements, utilizing a specific 60% Kevlar®/40% PBI webbing produced by Sturges Manufacturing Company, Inc. This particular webbing, employing the natural version of the material, successfully passed NASA-STD-6001B Test 1. The testing procedure involved evaluating the webbing's resistance to ignition and flame spread under simulated conditions. These results represent a critical step toward ensuring crew safety during missions operating in these challenging atmospheric circumstances.
