Researchers at Duke University are developing robotically assembled electromagnetic metamaterials designed to enhance long-range space situational awareness (SSA). This work directly responds to the growing number of spacecraft and satellites currently operating in orbit. Current US space surveillance network capabilities, such as the Space Fence upgrades, can detect objects as small as four inches but rely on ground-based systems. The new metamaterial technology aims to provide a more robust and precise method for monitoring larger objects across greater distances. Successful deployment could significantly improve detection ranges and contribute to safer operations within crowded orbital environments.
