The NISAR satellite has captured a detailed image of Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja, a prominent mountain located within East Antarctica. Utilizing its L-band radar technology, the mission successfully identified this previously obscured peak emerging from a flow of ice moving towards the sea. Data analysis reveals that the presence of the nunatak induces significant stress on the adjacent glacial ice sheet. This stress is directly responsible for extensive surface fracturing observed around the mountaintop’s base. Scientists are currently studying these patterns to better understand glacier dynamics and their response to topographic features.
