Astronauts exploring the lunar South Pole face significant challenges related to triboelectric charging and plasma interactions. Walking across the lunar surface generates electrical charges through tribocharging, while exposure to ambient plasma causes plasma charging of the spacesuits. These processes dramatically increase in severity within Permanently Shadowed Regions or PSRs. Within these shadowed areas, the spacesuit accumulates a considerable negative electric potential as a result of charge build-up. NASA is actively investigating mitigation strategies to address this grounding challenge before future long-duration missions.
