How Lockheed Turned A Wrecked YF-12 And A Test Fuselage Into The Only SR-71C

Lockheed Martin repurposed a damaged YF-12A prototype aircraft and a test fuselage to create the sole SR-71C reconnaissance platform ever produced. This unique conversion occurred between 1983 and 1986 at Lockheed’s Palmdale, California facility. The project utilized components from the YF-12A, which had been retired due to engine issues, alongside elements of an earlier test fuselage. The resulting SR-71C was primarily designed for testing advanced avionics and sensor technologies. Ultimately, only one example of this experimental Blackbird variant was completed before its operational retirement in 1989.
