GPS-free test flight relies on Earth’s magnetic field

A recent test flight successfully utilized a GPS-independent navigation system developed by Honeywell, marking a significant step towards reducing reliance on vulnerable satellite signals. The MagNav prototype, awarded to the company in 2024 by the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), employs quantum technology to determine aircraft position. This innovative system leverages Earth’s magnetic field for precise location data, offering an alternative when traditional GPS is unavailable or compromised. Initial tests demonstrated high accuracy during the flight, highlighting the potential of this new approach. Further development and refinement are planned as part of ongoing military programs.
