Europe weighs modernizing Antonov An-124 or building its own C-17 successor

A recent EU-funded study focused on bolstering strategic airlift capabilities within the European Union has presented two primary options for addressing the continent’s significant cargo transport needs. The research identified a potential path involving the modernization of existing Antonov An-124 aircraft, representing a substantial investment in established technology. Alternatively, the study explored the feasibility of developing an entirely new heavy-lift aircraft specifically designed to meet Europe's requirements. This alternative would necessitate considerable development and construction efforts. Both approaches aim to ensure continued access to outsized cargo capacity currently supplied by the An-124 fleet.
