Earth has captured a new mini moon — but it won't stick around for long

Astronomers have confirmed the arrival of a small natural satellite, designated QQ8, into Earth’s orbit. This newly discovered celestial body was first observed by researchers at the Minor Planet Center on November 25th, 2023. Initial calculations suggest that QQ8 will remain in proximity to our planet until approximately December 25th, 2023. The object is estimated to be roughly 491 feet (150 meters) wide, making it significantly smaller than our own Moon. Scientists are currently studying its trajectory and composition to better understand its origins and potential impact on Earth's system.
