Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured striking images of Mount Hood and Mount Rainier during the summer of 2026. The photographs revealed significant portions of the Cascade volcanoes were obscured by dense wildfire smoke. This smoke was actively spreading throughout the entire Pacific Northwest region at that time. Specifically, the visible impact extended over Washington State and Oregon. Scientists are currently analyzing these observations to better understand the extent of the wildfires and their contribution to atmospheric conditions.
