An A-81 iceberg rapidly departed from the Weddell Sea on December 23rd. The massive ice mass subsequently decelerated as it approached the submerged continental shelf near South Georgia Island. Initial observations indicated a significant reduction in speed for the berg within approximately 60 nautical miles of the island's coastline. Scientists are currently monitoring the iceberg’s trajectory and assessing its potential impact on the surrounding marine environment. Further research will focus on understanding the factors contributing to this change in velocity, including water depth and seabed topography.
