3 Phoenix Airports to Test Runway Safety System for Ground Vehicles

Three major airports – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Phoenix Mesa Gateway Airport, and Harry S Truman International Airport – are collaborating on a pilot program evaluating Honeywell Aerospace's Surface Alert (SURF-A) system. This initiative involves studying the SURF-A technology designed to enhance runway safety for ground vehicles operating near aircraft. Honeywell Aerospace and the respective city aviation departments will conduct this study at each of the three locations. The goal is to assess the effectiveness of the SURF-A system in preventing collisions between ground traffic and airplanes during taxiing operations. Data collected from these trials will inform future deployments and improvements to airport operational procedures.
